What Drives the Cost of Furniture Fulfillment

Updated October 2026

Sofas, tables and case goods are heavy and bulky, so freight is usually the largest cost on a furniture order. Storage, packing and returns each add their own.

The primary drivers of furniture fulfillment cost are:

  • receiving and storing large, heavy pieces
  • picking and packing each order
  • protective packing, such as blanket-wrap and crates
  • freight, usually the largest cost
  • returns, which come back as freight

A 3PL can potentially lower the bill by setting freight class correctly at receiving, keeping accessorial charges in view, and choosing LTL or parcel for each order.

Same sofa, different bill

Why two brands can pay very different amounts for the same sofa

Suppose two brands sell the same sofa and pay the same rate for every touch in the warehouse. Their totals can still end up far apart. Freight class may be right for one brand and wrong for the other. Their exposure to accessorial charges can differ, along with where their stock sits and how many pieces come back.

Each of those is its own cost, set by something different. Freight is usually much larger than any of the others, so that is where the gap tends to show.
